Risk Assessments, Method Statements and Safe Systems of Work
These documents work together to ensure you are managing the risks within your workplace and its activities.
A Risk Assessment is a systematic process of evaluating the potential risks within a premises or site, or in a projected activity or undertaking.
A Method Statement is a document that details how to carry out work safely and efficiently, especially for high risk projects or tasks. It should include a detailed plan of the work, projected hazards, safety measures taken to address these hazards, First Aid procedures, required staff training, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required and work permits where necessary.
Safe Systems of Work are procedures to eliminate or minimise risks involved in a specific operation. They should be customised to the specific work environment and tasks being performed.
Did You Know
Under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, the minimum you must do is:
Identify what could cause injury or illness in your business (hazards)
Decide how likely it is that someone could be harmed and how seriously (risk)
Take action to eliminate the hazard, or if it is not possible, control the risk
As A Minimum…
If you employ 5 or more people, you MUST record your significant findings.
You must review the controls you have in place to make sure they are working. You should also review them if there are changes to staff, processes or substances/equipment used, or they may no longer be effective.
